Driftwood Adventures and the Tannin-Bane

*DISCLAIMER* Do you own research on driftwood. This does lower the pH of the tank. Mud Turtles are good with that, but make sure it is appropriate for your turtle.

Let me tell you, leeching the tannins from this driftwood has been quite an adventure. But, I’ll start from the beginning.

I bought this pack of driftwood (link). I didn’t do a lot of research beforehand (mistake) and it said it was for aquariums, so I thought it would be fine! The instructions that come with it say that to:

  1. Wash and clean the driftwood with brush
  2. Boil it in hot water for about 1-2 hours ,to release the tannin, until the water color do not change; Repeat the steps if needed
  3. Soak it into normal temperature water, for about 7 days
  4. Take it out and wash the driftwood

Well, I had to repeat this, A LOT! I treated this driftwood for a whole months before I thought it would be okay to put in the tank.

So what are tannins you might wonder? Tannins are a yellowish or brownish bitter-tasting organic substance present in some galls, barks, and other plant tissues, consisting of derivatives of gallic acid, used in leather production and ink manufacture. This is what gives blackwater rivers their name.

Here are some pictures of the process, keeping in mind that I was preparing 3 pieces so I could decide which one to put in later.

Second Try:

Still going ……..

It took FOREVER to get the tannins that came out in the boil to an acceptable level. But it finally did happen and the driftwood was ready to be used for a live plant!
